Everything is a FP drain including the tech tree. Your base income only has value if invested. GBs allow that investment to multiply.

The tech tree would require 28,143 FPs from stone age to completing Oceanic (more now that we have VF). Lets say on average you use 16 generated FPs per day from your base income. That'd take 1,758.94 days or just under 5 years to reach the start of Virtual Future.

That's not taking into account that you won't always be able to dump FPs into the next tech at the same rate you generate FPs.

With GBs you get more then what the daily generation gives - you also get contribution rewards if you're doing swaps. FPs + medals + GB output is far more attractive then just FPs

Without GBs you'd also find it either impossible or highly unlikely to complete any events beyond the first few ages. Each age you go up the requirements increase beyond the last. Base income would not be enough on its own.

All that said you'd still /have/ to build a GB just to complete the tech tree because without fighting GBs to increase your attacking army stats you'd never be able to produce boosted goods from the map - you'd never get through the map. Unboosted goods would take too long for the tech tree requirements and you'd never be able to breach neighbours long term without attack GBs
