What can medals be used for once all the medal expansions have been bought?

In mid-game once one has a level 80 Arc, or higher, and can earn medals by the tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands exhausting all the medal expansions comes around pretty quickly....

Now, I am fully aware of the medals becoming part of negotiations - wherever they pop up - however, I am wondering what other parts of the game medals are important? I ask this because I am about 16 months in with my oldest city with only two (2) medal expansions left to earn and expect to acquire all the requisite medals for these two expansions in the next few weeks...

I can then foresee quickly acquiring millions of medals without much need for them... (although hopefully the answers to this post will prove me wrong!)
