stone throwers?

I have recently researched "Stone Throwers" and have used them in battle.I think I made a mistake with these things because while you get great distance with them, they are very weak. Is there a way to improve there strength or are they just that weak

they get a bit of a boost if you put them on a hill, and having one or two of them can be helpful until you get archers. but yeah, generally they're way flimsier than they seem to be when the AI has them and you don't.

thanks for the response.I think I'll remove these from my line up for now.It seems slingers are just as effective and cost a lot less
