Suddenly, some - not all - of my inventory items come with a number in a circle in the upper right corner of the icon. What the heck is this?

Numbers in circles on inventory items

It shows new additions. So any increase since you last visited the inventory. If you had 30 of something and earn another 2 you will have a 2 in a circle. Usually they are the first items in the inventory till you click on inventory and clear them.
Not too certain if this is something new on browser and that's what you are using but the app has had it for a long time.
