GvG defensive armies.

When defensive armies in a sector are attacked daily, what exactly is attacking them? viz. is it the game or other players?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to determine if it's possible, by comparing the attrition rates among the DA's under attack, to discover which defensive combinations are the most effective. Thank you.

any sector in gvg with an aggressive npc next to it will be attacked daily at calc time and a defending army will lose a life
if a sector has 2 or more aggressive npc's next to it then it will lose a defensive army for each aggressive npc
the defenders army will lose a life / lives from randomly selected armies
