NB: This is both a conceptual idea poposal as well as lead for a discussion on where the FoE could develop in coming Era´s.

    The FoE Historic Concept

Last year in 2017 there was a Survey from the FoE Team - Amongst this Survey was an explanation saying that FoE always had aimed to be a game based on History. Naturally such a conceptual restain propose quite a challenge for developing new content. We are currently 4 Era´s beyond Contemporary. All the beyond Era´s have more or less been developed in regard to what the current world proposes for new technologies, Society survaillience, Climate Changes resulting in arctic cold down or sea levels rising and so forth. A long way down this road these Era´s have managed to stay connected to real world possibilites and future prospects of various kinds - FoE Devs have done the best to live up to the Concept of staying in Real World and connected to "History" avoiding to move into wild science fiction.

History (Before Contemporary) , Contemporary, Tommorow, Future, Archtic Future, Oceanic Future, ...?

    So much Oceanic future

At least to me, staying in OF for the next Tech Tree, would appear like quite an overextension in regard to previous development cycles and Era´s. It is not that OF is not good, but it´s been around for quite a while now. I do realize that developing a new Era is not a easy job and we as players might have been spoiled with a literally free game and new Era´s coming up regulary. Never the less for Developers to create new content a good concepts does nearly half the job - And a good concept is inpirational rather than limiting.

The World right now and beyond

In the real world at this very moment in time we are seeing new ignited focus on interstellar commitment, Space-X, China and Europas combined Intentions to build a base on the Moon and several other projects like the Moon Europa.

Somehow it would seam like a natural continuation of FoE to make a new Era based on interstellar Endaevor. And I am not talking "Starcraft" and Aliens here - but nearby planetary exploration in our solar system. That could include the Moon, Mars and other planets yet needing to be explored, not to mention technology to harvest bypassing Asteroids, which NASA and a few other groups already have worked on.
There is plenty more of such projects around and science is facing though questions towards Quantum Therories and the Hichs parrticle amonst other things - Which in terms of Game development proposes options rather than limitations.

Securing a conceptual FoE platform for the Future of FoE

Opening for a new Interstellar Era could spur a whole new conceptual platform for futher FoE Era´s. Every Planet would require new specialized technology and thereby tech trees. It would secure FoE future Era´s concepts many years ahead. E.g for the Continent maps there would be lots of possibilites - Various sectors on each planet etc. To do such endaevor will need a lot of support on earth combining all previous technologies and knowledge to be succesful, so the players city would stay on earth regadless.

Into space and back to Earth

Who knows what might be found on planets further from our reach - Already many specualtions in regard to Mars are popping around on the internet. Wether these holds facts, are spin, clickbait, specualtions on purpose or not, are not so relevant in regard to FoE - it is after all is a game - an intereptation and not an exact display of reality, at least for the Eras beyond Comtemporary. Overall Interstellar exploration could mean that Humans would find new evidence to old Forgotten Technologies, ancient interstellar civilisations etc. - that way FoE could close the Historic Circle and bring back concepts like e.g.Pyramids in new form - in fact a whole lot conceptual liberating options and possibilities for a contiuned FoE devlopment.

In FoE we are already several Era´s ahead of time, so why not Interstellar exploration - It is happening in the real world so the Historic Conceptual Commitment would not be "broken" more than it already is - In fact the FoE beyond contemprary is not really broken at all - it just needs a new way to proceed to create new content to the story line that makes sense to the Games initial basis.

    - Let me know what you think,

.........could you imagine Interstellar Exploration as being part of the next Era´s in FoE ?.

No! Inno has previously formally stated that they have no plans to take FoE into space exploration.

I would much rather see a fun, post apocalyptic/primordial theme myself...
ie: volcanic & desert wastelands, with saurian/dragonic themed military units, and buildings that incorporate rock/steel materials & run on geothermal energy/magma flows!

Basically, we've had the Winter without end, and now we're finishing up the planet-wide Spring floods... Time for the literal 'Season of Fire' and the actual scorching Summer! 8-)

    I say... BRING IT ON!

Perhaps a pre-Ice Age or Megalithic Era would be nice (as proposed by a few non-mainstream archeologists).

Exactly my thoughts. Ideally Space era should've been after Tomorrow.
Continent map could be split up for different planets our civilization intend to colonize. This definitely would give fascinating content for a good 2-3 years.

Whatever they plan to do, they are already working on. These type of ideas are useless and a waste of time.

Well, if you look at the end of tech tree, you can see that Space Age Mars is next for coming

Jupiter, Sturn, Uranus and Neptune are unadapted for human settlement (They are too cold with way too strong winds, and most of them don't have a ground). In the solar system Earth, Mars and Io are the only planets and moon that have the resources for a long term, large scale and self sustainable settlement.

...or Inno can just go and pull the 'ol, "we have terraforming tech" and then go wherever they please. :P
(assuming we don't accidently wake up the Void Dragon on Mars first...)

With the winds your building units for your terraforming plants can't safely land.

If they've made it clear that space isn't going to happen, then isn't this whole discussion just a pointless waste of time?

Space Age Mars is already the next era
look at the end of the tech tree

so the discussion could be: what is next after Mars

We're into science fiction at this point; they can pull a 'Project Genesis' card and launch terraforming missiles/torpedoes at the planet.
