it depends on what the attacker uses to get through ur defenses.
most if not all higher players use 1 rail gun and 7 rogues to fight...8 drone swarms are very effective against them, but they also struggle against other units. so if u can keep the attacker guessing what ur def will be..that helps. and higher def bonus will help too.
sometimes it isnt necessary to win against them.....if the battles cost them a lot of units...they might stop attacking you altogether.

8 drones are only effective with 100+% defence. And even then, you have to be lucky for them to start close to the attacking railguns.
