If I leave a guild do I then have to wait to be invited to join another? Or can I ask to join a new one? Sorry for a banal question - I am an ancient noob

There is no wait period, so yes, you can ask another guild for an invite as soon as you leave. If another guild has already sent you an invite before you quit, you could join that guild as soon as you leave your previous one (assuming they haven't canceled their invite).

Huh, I don't even get a cake now as my wife doesn't trust me with lighted objects. I seem to remember having been here before, many many years ago!!
