During era's roads improved, from trails and paths, to walkaways and boulevards. Last future era, has its own solar ways, great material, however still mass production.
Time for something exclusive, with great specs: diamonds roads. Every diamond delivers 1 happiness, every 1x1 road contains 32x32 diamonds that generates an additional 1024 happiness. And every 2x2 road even 4096 happiness.
Have you Checked the Ideas section for the same idea posted by someone else? Is this idea similar to one that has been previously suggested?

Reason:
1) Roads cannot be polished, why not put the only items that are already polished by diamond polishers and make citizens happy, without the disturbing men cleaning the buildings all the time.
2) Your spend diamonds are still there and visible
3) Players like to buy status symbols and impress their neighbors.
4) Extra income for Inno
5) Not unimportant, delighted people

One road 1x1 consists of 1024 diamonds (32x32) and one 2x2 road 4096 diamonds (64x64). Purchase cost would be 1024 and 4096 diamonds.
Visual Aids:
For that purchase cost something impressive is needed --> bling bling. Technically I was thinking about reflection maps, in combination with ambient occlusion, however I deliver the visual creative ideas to inno.
Balance:
Players can choose to balance themself, the more roads replaced, the better balance.
Abuse Prevention:
Does your proposal open up possible exploits or make it possible for players to cheat? If so, then how can this be addressed?.
Yes, strong glue is advised, to avoid plundering.
