Its a personal choice... I found horsemen to be hopeless and that spearmen / slingers combined got the job done so I skipped stone throwers. I am doing the equivalent in iron age now with soldiers and archers and it works fine though I have kept slingers because you can use one for bait to lure the AI and they are cheap to replace

Personally i use only archersx2, spearsx1, and siege machinesx1. At LMA now.
