What happens if you "retreat" in battle?

Do you just loose everything you have lost? and loose the battle??
Yes, but the idea is that you don't take any further damage.
(Caution: the retreat doesn't seem to take effect until one of your units is able to move, so it is possible for the enemy to get in a few more hits before you escape...)

Strangely enough you loose the dead ones even if you win. May be it's got something to do with them being, mhm 'Dead'!
