I suppose I could warm up the rest of the house by setting it on fire but that would only be a short term gain

Some houses are built so they can have a fireplace in the wall between two or more rooms, so they can heat multiple rooms. Heating just one room with it (where I spend the least amount of time ) would not be worth it for me.

I could open mine up so it was in the kitchen too, but would mean knocking a bit of wall down which is a lot of effort

Okay, kitchen + living room is the same space here. But bathroom, study/bedroom are at totally separate places, there's no way I could get the heat over to those (unless using pipes and water, like now, but then gas is cheaper, so no point).

I like getting it done all the way too, but now being in CA, GE costs a lot of rogues.

Yup, encounters 12, 15 and 16 are rather tough, and I definitely can't do them on autobattle. But on a computer, they are doable.
