Population/number of houses

I am currently in Colonial age, with 32 arcade houses, and 15 apartment houses, and yet my population stands at only 529. How can this be?

Goods buildings and army barracks use population, so 529 is what you have left.

To know what your actual population is, hover your mouse over where it displays available population, or if on the app, I'd assume tapping it would show that.

You can find a basic description of population here. I would also add that the population you see on screen is available population not your total population.
