Independent Warrior's Guide to Great Buildings Success

By: Scionofgod and CloudStar

Everyone knows that Great Buildings have amazing effects that help people build the city of their dreams. So, how does one go about getting the Great Buildings of their heart’s desire? How do you separate the first rate buildings from those that are a waste of space? This guide will answer those questions and more so that you will be able to build the city of your dreams.
How to get blueprints:

There are four ways to get blueprints. Let’s go over the four ways and how to go about them:

1) Polishing/motivating/Plundering
2) Quests
3) Donations
4) Diamonds

Polishing/motivating/ plundering is one of the best ways to get blueprints. Not only does it help out your friends and family, when you do it, you have chance of getting a blueprint of that age. For example, if you polish a tavern or motivate a house/supply, you have a 1% chance of getting a Statue of Zeus or Tower of Babel blueprint. Because of that, I recommends that you polivate everyone every day, the more people the better. I have gotten three entire GBs from polivating alone. The pro of polivating is that it is free and helps out your guild and friends. The cons is that it is random and costs you time.

Quests:

Every age has several repeatable quests that give random rewards. When doing quests, skip over the ones that you cannot do immediately until you reach the repeatable quests at the end for the current era you’re in. You know they are repeatable when you get a warning box that says the quest will most likely come up again when you click the abort quest option. Look through some of them and see which ones you can easily do. You can easily do the repeatable quests 3 to 15 times a day depending on how you set up your city. Some of the possible rewards for the quests are: a set amount of gold, supplies, medals, and 5 trade goods of your current age, 20 diamonds, and a random blueprint from your current age and below.

Medal reward per age:

BA -> 5 medals

IA -> 10 medals

EMA -> 15 medals

HMA -> 30 medals

LMA -> 50 medals

COL -> 75 medals

InA -> 125 medals

PE -> 180 medals

ME -> 275 medals

I have set up two test cities and says that the lower the age you are in, the easier it is to do those quests. Within 48 hours,We got 3 Zeus blueprints on each city. Cons, it takes time to cycle through the quests, it can get quite annoying, and the rewards are random. Pros, it is free and gives lots of good random rewards.

Donations:

Donations are the second most expensive way to get blueprints. Here are some tips to make that cost worth it:

As far as I can tell, there are only two ways to donate, going for first place, or going for fifth place. First place costs you the most forge points which you could be using to research or donating to other GBs to get blueprints that way. Although, you will get the most amount of medals and forge point packages back, and also you will get more blueprints in first place than in fifth. However, in fifth place, aside from getting one blueprint, you are saving up forge points that you could be spending elsewhere. The pros are that if you are active, you are guaranteed a blueprint for that GB you donate to. Cons, they cost FP, and if you are not active, you will lose your spot.

Diamonds:

Diamonds are the easiest and fastest way to get blueprints, but they cost a rare resource in the game or real life money. Fluffy prefers to spend diamonds on expansions. Cons: diamonds are a finite resource, and as such, are better spent elsewhere.

List of Great Buildings:

Observatory: (No Age)

The observatory gives 4 to 8 goods a day and those goods are directly placed into the guild’s treasury. The goods depend on the age you are in. Mainly, it gives a tremendous support pool bonus in Guild Versus Guild (GvG). The observatory gives the most support pool bonus than all other GB combined. In Pros: it is extremely small, its size is 3 by 3, it is quick to make and levels up fast. Cons, you can only get blueprints on special events or by donating to other observatories, which means it requires a lot of resources to get blueprints.

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Observatory

Statue of Zeus: (Bronze Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Statue_of_Zeus

Pros: Zeus is cheap; one of the best GBs in the game, and it is small. Cons: The rewards for it kind of suck, and it only has one boost.
Tower of Babel: (Bronze Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Tower_of_Babel

Pros: it is relatively small in size, and it gives two bonuses, population and trade goods. Cons: you have to get it to level 10 in order for the GB to be a benefit and it costs quite a bit of fps to get there which could be used in more important things; the recommended age for it is late game.
Coliseum: (Iron Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Colosseum

Pros: it gives medals and rewards. Cons: it is immensely fluffily huge and the rewards are lackluster compared to other GBs of the same size.
Lighthouse of Alexandria: (Iron Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Lighthouse_of_Alexandria

Pros: it is one of the best GBs in the game. It is small in size and you can get it early. It gives trade goods and supply boost, which are amazing. Cons: fluffy can think of none.

Hagia Sophia: (Early Middle Ages)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Hagia_Sophia

If this Gb is built early, recommended at EMA or sooner, it will save up a lot of space since with Hagia Sophia a lot less cultural buildings are required. In addition it gives forge points as a minor bonus which will help you well into late game. Pros: it saves you space. Cons: it is a big GB.

Aachen Cathedral : (Early Middle Ages)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Aachen_Cathedral

Aachen is also one of the greatest GBs in the game. It gives attack bonus and its secondary bonus is a minor (small) set amount of gold. It adds up with other attack and defense GBs so you should get all of them. Pros: it is small, and it is an attack GB. Cons: its secondary bonus is lackluster.

St. Mark’s Basilica: (High Middle Ages)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/St._Mark's_Basilica

St. Mark’s is rather large and a game changing GB. It gives you goods of your current age which saves you space and if you have 30 of the eight hour houses it will double your gold and get better from level 1 thereafter. People have said over and over again that after they got St. Mark’s they never had to worry about again. Pros: it is the highest trade good boost giver GB and it gives you huge amounts of amounts of gold. Cons: it takes up a chunk of space.
Notre Dame: (High Middle Ages)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Notre_Dame

Pros: it gives happiness and supplies. Cons: the GB is huge compared to the small amount of rewards it gives, even at level 10. At max level it gives, 3900 happiness and 7240 supplies and it costs a total of 3180 forge points to get there (from 1 to 10). If you divide that by 24 FP per day, that is 132 days to get to level 10 all for a small amount of happiness and supplies.

Cathedral of St. Basil: (Late Middle Ages)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Cathedral_of_St._Basil

This average sized GB is built late into the game as other GBs are more important to build first. The two mains boosts for this GB are defense boost, which makes it harder for you to get plundered, and support pool. Pros: it doesn’t take much space, makes it hard for you to get plundered, and adds to support pool. Cons: it is a late game GB as there are better GBs to build first, and you could use your current space for other things.

Castel Del Monte: (Late Middle Ages)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Castel_del_Monte

It is a medium sized attack GB, which is awesome. In addition to being an awesome GB, it gives forge points boost. Along with the other two attack GBs, this one is also one of the greatest. Pros: it is an attack GB, it is average sized, and it gives forge points. Cons: Out of all the attack GBs, it costs the most FPs to level up.

Deal Castle: (Colonial Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Deal_Castle

Deal castle is a large GB, occupying a 7 x 7 space. It gives a defense boost and medal rewards. At level 10 it gives 30% defense and 130 medals a day. Pros: it has a defense bonus. Cons: it’s large and the medal rewards for it kind of suck late game when you should be trying to get it.

Dresden Frauenkirche: (Colonial Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Dresden_Frauenkirche

It’s a medium sized GB, occupying a 5 x 5 space. It gives happiness and goods productions per age, starting at 7. at level 10 it has 196 happiness per square, and considering its small size, it gives more happiness per square than Hagia Sophia. Cons, it does not give alot of happiness and goods productions compared to other GBs. However, for its size, it’s a pretty good GB.

Royal Albert Hall: (Industrial Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Royal_Albert_Hall

This GB is like the light-house, adding supplies and goods per age, only it is an upgraded version of it. Pros: it gives more bonuses and more of them, it stacks with the light-house, and it’s great for doing quests.. Cons: it’s repetitive, and its size is huge, occupying a 7 x 6 space.

Capitol: (Industrial Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Capitol

It is a 7 x 5 GB that gives population boost and supplies boost. At level 10 it gives 10530 population and 15800 supplies. Pros: it saves you spaces on houses so that you may build other things. Cons: the supplies boost suck. The habitat is a better version of this GB, although it is four ages above.

Alcatraz: (Progressive Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Alcatraz

It is one of the best happiness boost GBs, and it gives unmatched units, which will get your military fix. You should get this GB as early as possible, recommended age is HMA or higher. Pros: it gives unattached units, which is really handy and useful, and it gives a decent amount of happyness. Cons: it is a very huge GB, one of the biggest GBs in the game, sized at 10 x 7.

Châteu Frontenac: (Progressive Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Château_Frontenac

Its size is 5 x 6, and it gives a coin and quest boost bonus. At level level 10, it gives 34910 coins and 150% quest boost. Pros: it increases the reward amount for quests, which can be really beneficial, and it is an average sized GB. Cons: the coin bonus for it kind of sucks.

Atomium: (Modern Age)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Atomium

It’s a 7 x 6 sized GB that gives happiness goods for guild treasury bonus per age. At level 10 it gives 8000 happiness and 20 goods to guild treasury per age. Pros: it gives a lot of happiness and goods. Cons: it’s a late game GB and it is a big one.

Space Needle: (Modern Era)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Space_Needle

It’s a 6 x 5 GB that doesn’t give good bonuses. It gives a small amount of coins and happiness for its age. At level 10 it gives 60 thousand coins and 4 thousand happiness. Pros: it gives happiness and gold. Cons: for a Modern Era GB, the rewards for it suck.

The Habitat: (Post Modern Era)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/The_Habitat

It’s a 7 x 6 sized GB that gives population and gold bonuses. At level 1 it gives 4410 population and 10100 coins. This will allow you to have more space for military barracks and other buildings.

Cape Canaveral: (Post Modern Era)

http://forgeofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Cape_Canaveral

The only thing we know right now about the cape canaveral is that it gives forge points.
More updates to come later.

Some notes you might find useful...

STATUE OF ZEUS: There is no cons to Zeus. It is small, and it gives same attack boost as Aachen and del Monte. Also, it is relatively cheap in terms of FPs.

TOWER OF BABEL: It is small, which means that when at high level it is able to replace one of the huge goods factories that come in later eras.

SAINT BASIL CATHEDRAL: The defense boost is useful only if you're in a hostile neighbourhood, or if your guild is heavily involved in GvG. If you're not getting plundered often and your guild is not in GvG, its defense boost is of little use.
The second boost is coins.

FRAUENKIRCHE OF DRESDEN: The happiness boost is useful, as it allows to get rid of bunch of cultural buildings and free up some space for better buildings.

Great guide! :D There is two things though that will need some fixing:
1) (On the Doc) You're missing the name Dresden Frauenkirche at that last table you made on the bottom
2) There were a few GBs that were readjusted during this 1.36 update, and those GBs haven't been updated on the FoE wiki

DeletedUser101865

Im not sure if i can do anything about the FoE wiki, do u have any ideas?
Ill fix the suggestions u guys posted on the google doc asap!
Thanks Byeordie!

Thanks Scionof god. I read this with interest, it's an excellent guide. It's good to see opinions about GBs from players who have experience in them. I'm pretty new but it's clear GBs are a big commitment and getting the right ones at the right time can make a differnece in the game. It's obviously taken time to make this guide so from one player to another - thanks for the time you've taken to do this.

DeletedUser101865

Thank you Lasthours for your reply ;-) We put alot of work into it, around 60 hours. Still work is being done.

DeletedUser103491

Awesome work and very handy to have. Thanks for all the hard work.

There are several thread regarding the pros and cons for great buildings running at this time, however I will add my comments to this thread as well in age order as follows, furthermore if you undertake to join forge point clubs this is an effective way of getting your great buildings levelled up and also getting medals, forge points and blueprints

Statue of Zeus - Bronze Age
This is a cheap and effective great building to invest in but is only useful if you are going to undertake military operations
Tower of Babel - Bronze Age
This is a very useful great building to have in ones city as the rewards far outweigh the investment in the building if you invest your self, you get a decent population boost and also the benefit of current age goods buildings up to modern age and either colonial, industrial or progressive age goods depending upon age thereafter but at twice the quantity so an all round good building to have and also it cannot be plundered
Colloseum - Iron Age
Too large for its rewards so avoid it unless you really want to build it or are not planning on doing much fighting, then the medal reward eventually makes it useful
Lighthouse of Alexandria - Iron Age
A must have great building for any serious player - the rewards are current age goods to Progressive Era and unrefined goods after that and a boost to supply for the first 40 collections which is another must have and all in a 4 x 4 building and it also cannot be plundered
Hagia Sofia - Early Middle Age
A good building to include in ones city - decent happiness factor and forge points which are an essential for growing your city
Cathedral of Aachen - Early Middle Age
More useful if you are planning on a military campaign but still with a decent coin contribution
St Marks Basilica - High Middle Age
A must have building for any city - goods which every one needs and a coin boost for the first 75 collections this is a potential game winner in higher levels together with the fact that the goods produced can not be plundered
Notre Dame Cathedral - High Middle Ages
Only really useful if you need happiness so unless you really want to include it, avoid this building
Castel del Monte - Late Middle Ages
The forge point collection every day make this an essential building to include in any city even if you are not planning on a military campaign
St Basil's Cathedral - Late Middle Age
Only useful if you are in a warlike neighbourhood or if your guild has rankings systems that require it otherwise avoid
Deal Castel - Colonial Age
Large but the medal contribution will make this a useful addition as over a period of several months it will generate sufficient medals to pay for the expansions that it cost to build it - also gives you a defence boost which can be handy
Frauenkirche of Dresden - Colonial Age
Very useful building to include in ones city for the sheer fact that it gives unrefined goods which can not be plundered
Royal Albert Hall - Industrial Age
A must have great building if you need supplies (which everyone does) this building combined with the lighthouse gives a significant supply boost and also unrefined goods as well which are not subject to plundering
Capitol - Industrial Age
This building should only be built if you really want to include one in your city
Alcatraz - Progressive Era
No matter what way you look at this building it is a must have, excellent happiness contribution and free troops which means that you can remove happiness buildings and military buildings and still do all the things you would like to do with a large military
Chateau de Frontenac - Progressive Era
Again - a must have building for any city, a decent coin reward but the best factor of this building is that it boosts all quest rewards apart from units and forge points so it has the combined effects of a Tower of Babel, Lighthouse of Alexandria, St Marks Basilica, Colloseum, Notre Dame, St Basils, Frauenkirche of Dresden
Atomium - Modern Era
Really only good if your guild is engaged in Guild versus Guild (most guilds are)
Space Needle - Modern Era
Only build this if you really must have one
Cape Canaveral - Post Modern Era
This building gives forge points which everyone needs so if you have the goods, blue prints and space try and build it
Habitat67 - Post Modern Era
Unsure on the merits of this building
Lotus Temple - Contemporary Era
Unsure of the merits of this building
Innovation Centre - Post Modern Era
Unsure of the merits of this building
Observatory - No Age
A cheaper alternative to the Atomium - most guilds that are active and participate in Guild versus Guild find this an essential building as it gives a constant supply of current age goods into the guild treasury and also boosts the guilds defence factor and at only 3x3 it is the second smallest great building in the game
