Expansion - how does terrain affect the game?

I can now expand, but could head towards a nearby river (surely this must be beneficial?) or towards what looks like a coastline (maybe a better option). Does the terrain have any impact on the game, or is it just decorative?

Loving the game so far.

Just reached the lake/river and the land available for expansion stops before I get to the water, so there are limits to the size of the village. Now lets try another direction!

Would be cool to eventually add boats and fishing for supplies and goods when reaching that river! Next age maybe?

You can see the total expansion size aqllocated to you by clicking on the "move" button, selecting a tree or something to move and then you can move around the whole sector including the areas you do not yet own.

boats are way outdated if they're to be introduced after the high middle age... there were already dug out canoes around late stone age but it would be cool to see fishers/traders shuttling back and forth from our ports, representing income of both coins and supplies through "trade" (hmm time to head out to ideas section...)
