Alternative to Event Quests: Expeditions, Continent Maps, Cities

DeletedUser16112

Please note that this is more a structured brainstorm than a "finished" idea. It's an illustration of the potential of leveraging existing mechanics meant to inspire the guys and gals at Inno.

Proposal:

Leverage the already implemented City, Expedition and/or Continent Map mechanics to give players a new type of event experience as a complement to regular quest based events.

Have you Checked the Ideas section for the same idea posted by someone else?
Yes. There is this idea that is only tangentially event related, but does leverage the expedition mechanic. I feel this idea is different enough to warrant its own post.

Reason:
I was reading the May Day Event discussion thread and there were plenty of opinions that there was too much events recently, and that the quest lines for events disrupted players' plans and were becoming repetitive. I had this category of ideas when I tried to come up with a way to make events more unique.

Using already implemented mechanics should cut down on development time and once in place should be reusable with minor changes and art.

Details:

Expeditions:
The event could be a custom made expedition, with a number of encounters and reward chests. It could be implemented several ways - either age based like today or instead of getting Lanterns, Footballs or other event currency each hour players get event troops to use in the expedition (pumpkinhead scarecrows and ghosts for the Halloween event for example).

Continent Maps:
A temporay map is available during the event. This can be an island, underwater or on the moon. The player has to conquer the map to get the rewards of each province, either through battle or negotiation. Like the expedition idea, this could be with current troops and resources or it could be using special event troops and/or resources (for example negotiating with candy during the Halloween event).

City:
Players get a new city map for the duration of the event, and the event consists of meeting city goals, like population, production of coins and/or supplies or similar. The buildings can be from the game (for example allowing all players to play around with Oceanic buildings for a short while as a teaser) or custom for the event (for example Halloween themed, with some assets reused as event prizes). The city background can be custom as well, and be reused as player reward as described in this idea.

All of the above:
A really cool and ambitious event would be a combination of the above - players get a small plot to build a city on, produce troops and conquer a small map or expedition, all of it themed to the event. To use the Halloween example again, a small city plot with halloween themed buildings and background. Building confectionaries and haunted houses the player gains coins and supplies to produce ghosts and monsters to fight on a custom expedition and/or continent map. Some art assets can be reused as rewards as mentioned above.

Balance & Abuse Prevention:
This is entirely up to the team that creates the current events.
