The announcements for events, etc, are pinned to the top of the message list. So on a browser, 1/4 of the first page of messages is a useless message we've already seen for the duration of the event.
In reality, it's virtually impossible to not notice the beginning of the event anyhow. So the announcement doesn't really serve much purpose in the first place, and once we've read it there's absolutely no rational reason at all why it has to sit there any longer.
