It allows you to do more encounters before your total number of attempts runs out. Normally you can't do more at a time than the number in your 'attempts bar', and when that is empty you either need to wait or buy extra attempts using medals.
Winning extra attempts can be very welcome if you are in the middle of a Rivals challenge that requires you to complete a certain number of Guild Expedition encounters before you can go on to the next challenge, for example.
